Una verde navidad/A green Christmas

¡Hola! Hoy me gustaría hablar de la Navidad. Es una época del año que, aunque muy bonita (¡a mí me encanta!) está llena de excesos. Parece que uno tiene que comer, beber y comprar en exceso, y lo peor de todo para mí es la cantidad de basura que producimos y de plástico que compramos. Por un lado, los árboles y prácticamente todos los adornos son de plástico. Por otro lado, usamos miles de metros de papel de regalo con sus cintas y adornos, que también son de plástico. En cuanto al papel, no suele ser reciclable por la terminación brillante del papel, que necesita de una máquina especial para poder hacerlo. No todos los países o ciudades la tienen porque cuesta bastante, así que al final esta cantidad de papel suele acabar en el medio ambiente. Pero por otro lado, decir que además las tintas que se usan en estos papeles de regalo no suelen ser orgánicas y por tanto, tanto durante su fabricación como durante su reciclaje si lo hubiera, producen bastante contaminación.

Hi there! Today I’d like to talk about Christmas. It’s a lovely time of the year (I love it!) although full of excesses. It seems we have to eat, drink and buy as much as possible. However, the worst thing of all to me is the amount of waste we produce and the tons of plastic things we end up buying. On the one hand, Christmas trees don’t grow everywhere so in places like Seville we have to buy plastic ones. Most of the Christmas decorations that we get are also made of plastic. On the other hand, we use metres of wrapping paper, ribbons, bows and bags. Regarding wrapping paper, the shiny finishing of the paper means it is usually non recyclable. A special recycling machine is needed for this kind of paper and most countries or cities don’t have them and besides, the kind of inks used to make most of them aren’t sustainable, which means that they’re very polluting during both their manufacturing and recycling process. Colchonetas saludables/Healthy mats

Llevo haciendo Pilates dos veces a la semana desde hace al menos 6 años, he empezado hipopresivos en octubre y a veces hago yoga también. Uno suele asociar sobre todo el yoga con la naturaleza, con un estilo de vida saludable y sostenible; en definitiva, con cuidarse por dentro y por fuera y mantener un equilibrio con lo que nos rodea. Sin embargo, ¿nos hemos parado a pensar que casi todo lo que usamos para estos deportes está hecho de PVC? Las colchonetas, los ladrillos, las tiras elásticas, los rollers, las pelotas ¡todo está hecho de plástico!

I’ve been doing Pilates twice a week for at least 5 years, I also started taking up hypopressives in October and I sometimes do yoga too. One tends to associate yoga (especially over those other sports) with nature and with both a healthy and a sustainable lifestyle; essentially, with taking care of oneself and of everything that surrounds us. However, have we actually realised the fact that pretty much all the props we use for these sports are made of PVC? Mats, blocks, elastic bands, rollers, balls, everything is made of plastic!
